Multi-Layer Forming Technology for Coating Board Production

Leizhan paper making equipment

Coating board production combines multi-layer forming with precision coating application to achieve superior printability and packaging performance. Modern multi-ply formers produce boards with 3 to 7 layers, each optimized for specific functional requirements. Basis weight ranges from 200 to 600 gsm with production speeds up to 600 m/min. The precise control of layer composition and coating uniformity determines the commercial value of the finished board.

Multi-Ply Former Configuration

Each forming section delivers a specific ply with controlled basis weight and fiber composition. The top layer uses bleached kraft or high-brightness recycled fiber for print surface quality. Middle plies incorporate lower-cost recycled fiber for bulk and stiffness. The back layer balances sheet curl and provides economic fiber utilization. Headbox consistency is 0.5 to 1.2 percent with slice opening precision of 0.1 mm.

Coating Preparation and Application

Coating color preparation systems handle solids content of 60 to 68 percent with viscosity controlled between 800 and 1,500 cP. Film press and blade coating stations apply 8 to 15 gsm coating weight per side. Drying uses infrared and air flotation systems with specific steam consumption of 1.3 to 1.6 tons per ton of paper. Automated coat weight control maintains uniformity within 2 percent of target.

Quality Control Parameters

Online measurement systems monitor basis weight, moisture, ash content, and caliper at multiple positions across the production line. Surface smoothness is maintained at PPS 1.0 to 1.5 microns for premium grades. Brightness management achieves 82 to 88 percent ISO depending on grade specification. Gloss levels reach 45 to 65 percent at 75 degrees measurement angle.

Maintenance and Operational Excellence

Coating blades require replacement every 8 to 12 hours of continuous operation. Former wires have a typical life of 45 to 60 days depending on filler content. Press felt replacement interval is 30 to 45 days. Coating color filters need daily inspection. Monthly preventive maintenance should include complete nozzle and air knife inspection on drying sections.
