High-Consistency Refining for Corrugated Medium: Power Savings and Fiber Quality

Corrugated medium production from recycled fiber requires a specific refining approach that develops strength properties without excessive fiber shortening. High-consistency refining at 25-35% consistency has emerged as an energy-efficient alternative to conventional low-consistency refining for this application.

High-Consistency Refiner Operating Parameters

High-consistency disc refiners operating at 30-35% consistency with 910mm or 1100mm disc diameters achieve specific energy consumption of 60-90 kWh per ton, which is 25-35% lower than conventional low-consistency refining at 4-5% consistency. The disc gap of 0.2-0.5mm combined with a rotation speed of 1480 rpm creates fiber-to-fiber friction rather than metal-to-fiber impact, preserving fiber length while developing fibrillation.

Fiber Property Development

At optimal refining intensity, high-consistency treatment increases water retention value by 15-25% while reducing fiber length by less than 5%. This translates to CMT values of 180-220 N for 112 gsm corrugated medium, meeting specifications for high-performance packaging. The freeness drop typically ranges from 40-60 mL CSF at the target energy input.

System Integration: Screening Before and After Refining

A pressure screen with 0.25-0.40mm slots positioned before the high-consistency refiner removes contaminants that could damage refiner plates. Post-refining screening through 0.15-0.25mm slots eliminates fiber bundles and shives generated during refining. This dual-screening approach ensures consistent stock quality while protecting refining equipment.

Energy Cost Comparison

For a 300 TPD corrugated medium line, switching from low-consistency to high-consistency refining reduces annual energy consumption by approximately 2,500-3,500 MWh. At average industrial electricity rates, this represents cost savings of 50,000-350,000 per year. Additional savings come from reduced refiner plate wear as high-consistency plates typically last 30-50% longer due to reduced metal-to-fiber contact.

Zhengzhou Leizhan Technology manufactures high-consistency disc refiners in 660mm, 910mm, and 1100mm disc diameters. Complete stock preparation lines for corrugated medium production are available with capacities from 100 to 600 TPD.
